Mary at Parque de Las Americas, Merida

Hola, loyal reader! When last we left Bruce and Mary they had just moved into their home, a huge casa on Calle 47 in Mérida, the capital of Yucatan. Now the holidays have come and gone and there is trouble in Paradise. Bruce’s gym has closed and Mary no longer works on the beach in Progreso. Sure, with the house sitting gig, overhead is low but not non-existent. And Bruce and Mary are a little too young for spend down, not that they have anything to spend down. Join them on their way to MELO night, the monthly Mérida English Library mixer where they always meet some interesting people.

I inquire as to why he is leaving so soon and he quickly responds that it is quite crowded and he has another event to attend. He quickly walks away. I am always amazed that this octogenarian body moves better than mine does, as does his brain.

We buy our drink tickets from the volunteer at the front desk and make our way to the gardens. It is wall to wall people as there is a poetry reading going on as well. I greet many friends and introduce them to mom and then I work my way through the crowd to get us drinks.

I see our friends from the beach town of Progreso, Carl and Joni, and they wave me over. I’ve lost Mary and mom is talking to a young woman who is leading a foreign exchange group from DePaul U. Making my way through the crowd I bump, literally, into my Irish Canadian friend, Loman. I tell him that we’re hosting a cocktail party soon and that I was thinking of inviting him but I wasn’t so sure, because our Brit friend, Dave will be there. I said, “I’d be worried about a battle.” In his Irish lilt he responds, “And there would be, to the last man!”

I finally get to Carl and Joni’s table and Carl leaves his seat to get a drink so naturally I steal it. I start quizzing Joni about their new jobs that I’d heard about through mutual friends. Joni explains that she is a “moderator” for a company that contracts with companies such as the CBC, Canadian Broadcast Corp, to moderate, in this case, the reader commentary to news stories. They are charged with making sure that comments containing racism, hate speech, and just plain old profanity are not posted. Then Joni explains the irony of Carl working for them as Ken, the founder of the company used to work for Carl and when he struck off he asked Carl to work for him. Carl’s good natured response was, “Ken, you can’t afford me.” That was then and now Carl and Joni are early retired to the beach in Progreso and finding that just sitting by the pool sipping Margaritas does not fill the day, prompting Joni to tell Carl, “Give Ken a call, I bet he can afford you now.” We both laugh, Carl is always fair game. I get the email address for Ken from Carl and Joni as they take their leave to catch the last bus for Progreso. Who Framed Roger Rabbit buy

The crowd is thinning and it’s time for us to leave. On the walk home I get Mary and mom up to speed about the moderation jobs. We wonder if we can actually make a living, working part-time on our computers from poolside (sorry but that is the best place for wifi in our monster house). It sounds a little bit too good to be true. But we’ll have our apps in tomorrow. Could this be the long term solution to the escape to México equation?

Thanks for visiting gentle reader. Stay tuned as Bruce and Mary check out this “moderation” thing. Does sound a little too good to be true, doesn’t it? But actually the next post will be a short one concerning “medical tourism”. Hasta pronto. Lake City the movie

Homeless and Happy in Merida

Our New Digs

Our New Digs

It’s December 1, 2008 and this day finds Bruce and Mary moving into another new place in Mérida, México. It is their 4th residence since coming to Mérida in March. Let’s see how they get this particular house sitting gig.

We’re a little sad to be leaving the house on Calle 52, it was a very romantic and comfortable house but we’re on to new and certainly bigger things, as Harry and Melva’s casa can best be described as a small hotel.

We’d met these two San Franciscans at Jana’s Obama Nomination party. It seemed karmic, our first meeting, as we both arrived at Jana’s door simultaneously, they by cab, we by foot. Harry was very gregarious and with a radio announcer’s voice he introduced himself immediately, “Hi, My name is Harry, think Harry Truman as we’re about the same age!” We laughed as Harry was obviously a robust man, about 6’2”, early 60s with a grey ponytail and closely cropped beard. I certainly did not forget his name the rest of the evening. Melva was attractive, short and compact with a smile that nervously flickered off and on.

Miguel, chief of staff, greeted us at the door and walked us by the pool and back to the patio off the dining room in this million dollar house. Drinks were served and there was a ton of tasty botanas, appetizers, which I inhaled. After milling about with several fellow Mérida Verde folks, Mary and I followed one group to the master bedroom to watch and listen to Al Gore give his speech, on the huge flat screen in that 1000 square foot bedroom with a jungle walk-in bath, open to the sky. Criminy, that bedroom was bigger than my first house, and a lot better decorated!

Back to the speech. Actually we tried to listen to Gore as the Spanish translation drowned out his speech. I noticed that the only people in there were gringos with their local spouses, all Spanish speakers. I wondered where everyone else was and I discovered that the “English room” was the front bedroom where the satellite feed was not translated. I led the expedition to the English room for Mary and me and I found a seat next to Harry. We talked politics naturally, during commercials, and again I was amazed by the fact that our gringo society down here is comprised mostly of very well off people and they are all liberals!

Shortly before Barack Obama’s acceptance speech Miguel and staff passed out wicker TV trays for the main course which Jana’s Haitian husband René simply calls meat salad. And that’s exactly what it was, four kinds of meat in Romaine and Arugula greens served in a huge bowl. Despite the fact I had pigged out earlier on botanas, and my mother’s admonition to never eat anything bigger than my head, I remained in the clean plate club.

After Obama’s speech in which he nearly channeled MLK we all retired to a couple groups in the patio and the kitchen which was where I found myself along with René and Harry. Our group was having fun and when Harry claimed Minnesota heritage by virtue of his MN conception, I laughed my butt off. It seemed his dad, stationed at Fort Snelling, had a tryst with his mother in a part of Fort Snelling that is now an airport runway. I did grant him MN ancestry.

Meanwhile, Mary had had an intense conversation with Melva about house sitting for them. They had just finished construction and renovations on their colonial and were going to use it for vacations 2 or 3 times a year and would not retire to it for three more years. Melva had heard about us through Jana, her friend of 18 years.

Mary and Melva joined our group and Melva and I became involved in a conversation mutually extolling the virtues of house sitters as opposed to renters. Melva says, “So you’ll do it?” “Hold on!” I say, “I have no idea where we’ll be in 3 months much less 3 years.” We did agree to meet that weekend and tour their house, which is 6000 square feet, under roof.

We had conversations over the next few months. Our solid gold renter renewed the lease on our MN house for another year and we came to an agreement with Harry and Melva to house sit and today, it is move-in day.

The only glitch, but a pretty inconvenient one, is no water at our old place. Mary was going to wash all the bedding as I carted over our meager possession, but some clown walking by had turned our city water valve off. The roof top tinacas, reservoirs take forever to fill so we are essentially out of water for the day. Now we have to haul our stuff and all the bedding for washing and drying to our new house. The good thing is it’s only 4 blocks away. I guess it’s funny the things you can complain about when you live in paradise.

About sunset we are successfully moved in and we toast our new digs poolside, listening to our IPod jacked into Harry’s cool stereo. I think this will work.

Thanks for visiting gentle reader. Bruce and Mary’s original México escape plans have morphed out of all recognition and they have taken lots of missteps along the way but things keep working out for them, so far. Bruce hopes that some of you, and you know who you are, may become inspired; that you too, will take your job and shove it and move to México.  Hasta mas tarde!

Thanksgiving Day, Mexican Style

Bruce, Dave, Aaron, Jun, and Lulu at Dzilbilchaltun

Bruce, Dave, Aaron, Jun, and Lulu at Dzilbilchaltun

Bruce and Mary are still succeeding in their escape to México. The current equation is Bruce’s personal training income plus Mary’s one day at the beach in Progreso working for their friend, Jaromey, the property manager, minus zero for housing as they have established a niche house sitting. Join them this day as they celebrate Thanksgiving, Mexican style.

Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering film

Day dawns bright on this Thanksgiving Day in Mérida and it will be warm, the predicted high is around 88, and the sky is perfectly clear. We had signed up for a CIS trip to Dzibilchaltun just a few kilometers north of town because we wanted to distract ourselves, this being the first T-day ever spent without family. Before we leave Mary does call our three grown kids, her mother, sister, and brother on Skype. And it is Niagara Falls. We are glad to know that two of our three kids will be at my ma’s place as the gathering has been growing sparse, with the loss of two of my brothers this past year.

It’s time to head out the door of our vacation house (actually Jana’s vacation house download The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion! ) and stroll to the cocina economica just around the corner. We have breakfast, huevos motulenos, and we order three jamon y queso, ham and cheese, sandwiches for our outing. The breakfast is delicious. We settle up and grab our sandwiches and walk the block to CIS.

CIS A American Crimen buy offers outings every Thursday for their students and teachers and even though Mary doesn’t teach English there anymore, Jose Luis, the wonderful young man who runs this branch of CIS has insisted that Mary and I are always invited to these outings. Finally we taking him up on it. There are five of us plus Lulu a teacher who will act as guide on this trip. As we mill about two taxis pull up and Lulu, Mary, Jun a young Japanese man, and I jump in one of the taxis and off we go. Lulu is very outgoing giving Mary a good chance to practice her Spanish. As the taxi zips in and out of traffic to Dzibilchaltun I see the meter running and I wonder, being the cheap sucker I am, who is paying for the fare. We’d understood we were only responsible for the entrance fee. The meter tops 100P just as we pull up to the gate and Lulu quickly gets out money to pay this taxi and the one behind us. We introduce ourselves to Dave from England and Aaron from Portland. Dave is about our age, 50s, recently early retired from the computer business and Aaron is late 30s and a city worker. They’re both here on their own. Aaron is visiting for 2 ½ weeks and Dave is here for as long as he likes it.

The French Connection trailer

We each pay the 76P entrance fee and off we march. We start with Dzibilchaltun’s very modern museum. I’m not much of a culture guy but this is the best museum I’ve ever been in and I am actually quite entertained. There are artifacts and artworks and the stories of all the people who figure into the history of the Yucatan, including Europeans and Chinese, not just the Maya, who of course are the original inhabitants and still comprise 60% of the population of the Yucatan peninsula.

Out the back door of the museum Lulu leads us to a Maya house which is actually a couple of thatched huts. One is the living room, sleeping quarters and the other is the kitchen and el baño, naturally. From here we trek up to the main temple, The Temple of the Seven Dolls, which is rather modest, I’m sorry to say. Sleepy little Xcambo Deadwater download , which doesn’t even charge an entry fee has a more impressive temple. The claim to fame for this structure is that at the equinoxes the dawning sun is framed through the gateway at the apex of the temple, and people for many miles around come to view this twice per year event.

Is Anybody There? move

After the main temple we walk the central road by other ruins and through the ubiquitous ball park, common to all Maya ruins, on the way to the cenote.

We brought our swim suits along, just so we could brag to our friends up north that we had swum in a cenote on Thanksgiving Day. There is no changing room of course so Mary and I wander a little ways from the crowd and use a towel for a screen to make our quick change, which is quite exciting for Mary when a corner of the towel slips from my grip. Luckily for me, no one is looking in our direction at this moment.

We walk down to the cenote’s rocky edge and are a little surprised to see that one end of it is choked with water lilies. The other end is clear, which must be the part of the cenote that sinks to 140’ below ground level. The Yucatan, geologically, is a honeycombed limestone shelf that is actually an ancient coral reef. There are virtually no rivers in the Yucatan but plenty of water beneath the surface of the limestone rock. Where these subterrainian waters breach the surface you have a cenote.

We dive into the deep end and find it a remarkable experience due to the warmth and clarity of the water and the buoyancy which I can’t explain because this is fresh water. We both splash around for a bit among mostly locals and then somewhat painfully lever ourselves back onto the rocky ledge.  Our new Japanese friend Jun is quite brave in that with very little command of Español, he convinces one of the locals to loan him his snorkeling gear. Good for him.

Toweled off we grab our clothes which Aaron had been safeguarding and this time, since I am not to be trusted, we duck around the corner of a ruin hoping no one rounds that corner for a minute. No problema this time.

We return to the gate where a 25 passenger bus is waiting to take us back. Our group is first on so we make easy boarding for the other passengers by seating ourselves in the back of the bus. The bus fills up with a group of young people we assume are locals. Dave, fluent in Español, and a naturally friendly guy starts chatting up the man sitting next to him and discovers that he is the leader of this musical group, Tonos Humanos, which is currently in Mérida on tour.

This wonderful Columbian folklorico, folkmusic, troupe proceeds to serenade us with some of the most haunting and beautiful music, sung a capella, that I have ever heard. Boat Trip movie

Too soon, the bus reaches Calle 49, our stop, and as we say goodbye to all, the leader of the group tells Dave that we should come to their performance tomorrow at Teatro Daniel Ayala, a major venue in Mérida. Dave says, “Now we don’t have to!” Everyone laughs good naturedly.

Mary and I with our new friends Dave and Aaron walk the few blocks to our watering hole, La Gran Lucha, The Grand Fight, to have a couple brews and celebrate a most unusual and satisfying Thanksgiving Day.

The Book Launch at the Hotel San Angel

The Book Launch at the Hotel San Angel

Greetings loyal reader! When we last left Bruce and Mary they were still hanging in there, escape-to-México-wise, and had just wrapped up the final proofing of the book, “Living in Mérida”, a fundraising collaborative effort for the two non-profits Mérida Verde and Brazos Abiertos. Join them on this day in November 2008 as they participate in the book launch.

Today’s the day and our first order of the day is to buy some cigars at Mercer’s Cigars, an upscale cigar shop and bistro on Paseo de Montejo Prolongacion. We’re feeling pretty energetic so we walk the route which ends up being pretty close to three miles, I figure. Kevin and I pick out our 100P Cubanos which are actually on the cheap side in this shop. It’s a lot of fun to have Kevin and Rosie visiting again and this time we can put them up, and in style, as we are staying in Mérida Verde’s leader Jana’s vacation house.

download Choking Man movie

After a light lunch we take a city bus back home and everyone takes a nap except for me as I try to load a CD of music Kevin burned

for me into my ITunes. With out too much brain damage I finally get it figured out.

Around 6:30 we walk the short walk to the San Angel Hotel

for the 7:00-9:00pm event. Owner Homa has graciously volunteered her hotel lobby at no charge for this not-for- profit event. Word was put out by MELL, the Mérida English Language Library, in a batch email to all 550 members and a good turnout is expected. I suspect that the advertised free wine and botanas, appetizers, won’t hurt the cause.

Many of the Mérida Verde members, dressed to the nines, are already there preparing for the event when our party arrives and not to be outdone Kevin and I are wearing our authentic Guayaberra shirts . Rosie is nicely accessorized with her unique jewelry and Mary looks great in her birthday suit, meaning the outfit I’d just got her for her birthday. I introduce Kevin and Rosie to our friends and then Mary and I get settled at the book signing table. I’ve been practicing my signature and it is still a disaster, it never looks the same twice and it is completely illegible. But it will have to do, I guess. Mary and I had decided earlier that I would print the personalized messages accompanying my sig, because frankly, I can’t remember how to write in cursive, anymore.

There is a steady stream of people to our table, Mary takes the money and I write messages and sign the books. Many people bring their books purchased at other tables for signing, as well. I’m enjoying the fine red wine, the savory botanas, and the moment, feeling like some sort of celebrity, in this small gringo community.

I see many people I already know and meet a good many more including Judy, the mother of Yucatan Today’s GM, Andrea. Judy is a hoot! I’d heard how she had backed out of guest speaking at the International Living conference, here in Mérida. This year, International Living had selected Mérida as one the best cities in Mexico in which to retire and had invited Judy to speak at their conference held at the Hyatt, here in Mérida. They had insisted upon Judy’s social security number and she had told them to shove it. I introduce her to Mary and she says, “Hold on a second, I want to see your social, first!”

One Night with the King buy

It’s approaching nine and Jana takes the floor to give her little talk. Luckily all I have to say is “Thanks for coming everybody” when I am introduced because I have used up all of my limited amount of creativity in my personalized messages. Finally after a lot of speechifying the event wraps up and Kevin and I join Jana’s crazy Haitian Jazz musician husband, René, just outside the lobby doors for our victory cigars. We hear reports that some 120 books were sold. We’re all pretty amazed.

Back home we wind it down with Kevin and Rosie and they hit the sack about midnight. But Mary and I are too jazzed up for bed yet and we sit poolside in the 80° breezes. We reflect upon the impossibility of predicting this, a year ago, when we had just decided to make Mérida our escape to México destination. As Bilbo said, “It’s a dangerous business stepping out your door. You step onto the road and if you don’t keep your feet there’s no telling where you might be swept off to.”

Thanks for visiting gentle reader. Now that the book is launched, what’s next for Bruce and Mary as their escape to México continues to evolve? Stay tuned and see, Bruce will be reporting back soon. Hasta mas tarde!

We moved into our new digs September 2008 and this place was really nice! Jana had been kind enough to offer us their other house for temporary lodging during the final leg of this book project. This very romantic two bedroom west coast style house was extremely comfortable with mini-split a/c units in every room, and a dining room with a patio door that opened onto a beautiful blue tiled pool surrounded by gardens. There, we had a brief respite before we received the first of 2 hard copy manuscripts from Yucatan Today for proofing.

As we were in a new location, routines changed. Having a completely private pool was very cool and I finally realized what I wanted to do when I grew up – be a pool boy! Every day, after breakfast, I’d skim the pool, which was quite relaxing, and then take a dive from the deep end (5’) of the pool and dog paddle around. The water was warm but refreshing. Wilfredo our pool man did a good job of keeping the water crystal clear. After my pool thing, quite often Mary and I would do our yoga on the veranda off our bedroom facing the pool.

We found a new produce vendor on Calle 48 who was very reasonable and actually stocked Haas aguacates, avocados. We always had to buy them at Walmart, the previous vendors would only stock the locales, which are utterly tasteless. We also found a new cocina economica, economic kitchen, near the new vendor. The food was good but not quite as good as our old one, Luis’ Loncheria.

Our new local bar (where everyone knows our name) was called La Gran Lucha, The Great Fight. Manolo, the owner treated us like royalty every time we visited. We loved going on Sundays because that’s when he would roll his BBQ grille out onto the sidewalk and cook up either pork or chicken along with onions and other veggies for his free botanas. We’d usually have a couple litros of Victoria. The labels on the bottles say “27% Mas!” which is true in that these litros come in at 1.2L instead of the 940ml of the other brands. The total bill would be 58P about $5US for all we could eat, and a nice beer buzz, to boot. That is not a small part of why we love México.

Schock download

The weather was still hot, most days were in the mid 90s and it cooled off only to around 70, so in between writing long emails to my friends (Mary said I was having writer’s withdrawal) I’d take dips in the pool to cool off as we didn’t like running the a/c. And I was quite proud of having an empty inbox in my outlook. That never happened when I was processing the 1700 emails relating to the book.

In the evenings Mary would watch the satellite TV while I lounged in the pool nursing my martini and watching the bats zip around. Mary would often join me poolside and we would talk about how Mérida was really showing us the love and we would wonder how long that would last. It would kind of make me nervous, I would be reminded of the  times when a client, in my car selling career, would absolutely fall in love with me. Inevitably that person, usually for reasons out of my control, would end up hating me as much as they had loved me. So Mérida’s love made me a little uneasy, but it certainly was fun at the time.

The first of the two manuscripts were ready for proofing and the index needed to be added. I had asked Juanita the editor at Yucatan Today to please generate a word doc of the manuscript, with page numbers, so I could electronically search the key words and names that I had compiled as I wrote the book. We made a copy of the manuscript for Jana.  As it turned out there would be 3 proofers, including Jana’s house guest, Anita, and Mary a former proof reader at Alexandria Echo/Press for nearly 20 yrs would have to reconcile them all.

We settled into our book routine once more. It took me only about 3 days to do the indexing but poor Mary, not only did she proof the original, but she had to reconcile Jana’s and Anita’s copy, as well. Plus they wanted to change and add content. Frankly I don’t know how Mary did it but she did.

In the break between the first proof and the second proof we had to supply pix for every chapter plus the cover and back of the book. There had been much brainstorming over this. Ultimately, the cover was a composite supplied by Yucatan Today and the rest of the pix came from members of the two non-profits sponsoring this project, Mérida Verde and Brazos Abiertos, and Jana’s high energy Haitian, Jazz musician husband, René. That was a fun day.

A Nightmare on Elm Street dvdrip

Mary had volunteered to come up with pix ideas for some of the chapters and then we teamed up with René who had his favorite taxi driver, Guillermo ferry us to sites all over town. Mary would help René frame shots and I just hung out enjoying René’s company and wild stories. It got to be time for a late lunch so René treated us to expensive sandwiches at Hotel San Angel, a lovely boutique hotel right at El Remate de Paseo de Montejo, the top of Paseo. René invited Guillermo to join us at the sidewalk café and he insisted that he order the grande Primal Fear rip version of his sandwich, being that he was a rather large lad. We captured about a quarter of our pix that day.

The next proof was a lot easier in that Anita had gone home and there was only minimal content change but Mary still had to reconcile two final proofs. I probably should have felt a little guiltier as my job was done after the indexing while Mary had to bust her butt for another week or so, but I simply kicked back and enjoyed the life of Riley in our vacation home.

Thankfully, we were not involved in the marketing at all and it was nice to see a number of members who had made minimal or no contributions really step up to the plate and by the time of the book launch, agreements for selling the book had been made all over Mérida.

The only book responsibility left to us was the book launch and signing which sounded more like a good party than anything else. We were done with the work of the book and life in Mérida was looking pretty good.

Living in Merida, The Summer of 2008

Merida en Domingo

Merida en Domingo

Greetings, loyal reader. Strap yourself in because Bruce is going to cover a lot of ground in this post as he is trying to make good on his original promise of getting this blog up to real time.

The summer passes like it does in the old movies when they show the days flying off the calendar. Our daily routine starts with Mary’s colorful breakfast of fruits and avocados, and of course for me, sardines for dessert. Then I take a look at my emails which include an average of 8-10 from Jana of Mérida Verde collaborating with me on our Living In Mérida fundraising, book writing project. Mary settles into her class prep for her English classes at CIS and I get to work on the book. On the typical day we would knock off for happy hour at 5. Then Mary would proceed to thrash me in dominoes, our game being Mexican Train. But she still holds the record for most points in one hand – 301. That was lots of dots.

Christmas in Wonderland movie

We did get out and about, as well. We almost always did the Mérida en Domingo stuff, the Sunday celebrations of food and music, along with colorful vendors in la Plaza Grande. And our Friday night happy hours poolside at our crazy Canadian friends Jerry’s and Jasmine’s house became a tradition.  Legally Blondes movie download

Settling into our new part of town, we checked out the local bars settling on El Arco for ours because litros, liters, of Superior beer were only 20P, about 2 bucks! And their botanas, free appetizers, were pretty good. We enjoyed sitting in the back garden area. We checked out all the different cocinas economicas, economic kitchens – little cafes that open up onto the sidewalk, in our new neighborhood. We settled on Luis’ Loncheria. We’d bring our own bottles of water and get stuffed on very good, home-made Yucatecan cuisine for 50P total.

With the help of Sharon’s mapa de rutas de autobuses, bus route map, we explored the vast Mérida bus system, which we employed frequently. Sometimes, if we found ourselves on the wrong bus, and we didn’t care about the time, we’d just ride it the entire route back to where we started. This is not a bad way to get a tour of various parts of this city of one million souls, for only 5P. Special movie

Mary’s teaching at CIS was not for pay, as neither of us has a working visa. We have the FM3 rentista, retiree, visas. So she did trade-outs for Spanish classes for the both of us. I must be frank, I hated those classes. Quite often it would be just the two of us and the patient teacher would tailor the classes to Mary’s expertise. Considering Mary’s level of competency is nearly conversational and mine is “Una mas cerveza, por favor” I just dreaded those classes. They were two hours of sweating blood for me, I felt like my brain would explode like the aliens in Mars Attacks.

My personal training experiences were gratifying. I’d signed up a 60ish gay Canadian couple, Rich and Les and I trained them one on two (sorry about that) and I also had Tess, an elegant lady in her late sixties, originally from NYC. I would bus to the gym MWF, get my workout in and then train my boys first and then Tess. This worked out pretty slick. But the pay sucked. Fitness down here is upside down from my experiences back in MN. In St. Cloud, MN, a Gold’s Gym membership could be had for as little as $25 per month. Here in Mérida, memberships in a modern gym run about $50 to $220US per month. This did not impact us as I had privileges for Mary and me at my gym, Pure Fitness, but where the irony comes in is that back in MN I charged $75 per hour. Here in Merida, the most I can get away with is 100P for one on one and 150P for one on two, paid in cash. But with the book project I had all the workload I wanted, anyhow.

A Nightmare on Elm Street rip

The book project evolved into an all-consuming monster by the time the deadline approached. After several meetings with Jana we had selected all our chapter headings and invited a couple experts outside our group to write the Gardening, Colonias of Mérida, and Wine chapters. And Jana, a fine writer, wrote several of the chapters, but all the writing flowed through me so that the book would have a consistent voice. In the actual doing of it, we found that we lifted very little (with permission) from Jane’s Living in San Miguel. Consequently, this project turned into way more work than anyone anticipated. But some chapters really required little writing, simply an intro to the subject. An example would be the Health and Wellness chapter. I wrote the one paragraph intro and then what we needed was the contact info for all the hospitals and clinics and we needed expat recommended docs, specialists, dentists, chiropractors, etc. The way it worked, I emailed Jana my chapter intro. She would in turn send out my intro to all 30-some members with a plea for the contact info. I would take this info and put it into a consistent format and edit accompanying blurbs. Then I would do another rewrite for Jana’s approval and if we were both happy with the chapter, we would put it to bed.

As with any group project it’s always just a handful of members who do all the work. In this case it was Laurie who did the most. Laurie, a tall, attractive 50-something woman, came to Mérida as a college student on a study abroad program. She fell in love with a local and never left, much to the consternation of her folks, I’m sure. Laurie gave us a ton of info in all areas, but she would do them in the form of sporadic “brain dumps”, massive amounts of info that I would first have to categorize and then file for current or later formatting and inclusion.

By mid-June it became apparent that we would not get enough contact info from our group. This motivated Jana to explore a partnership with Brazos Abiertos

, an AIDS non-profit based out of Houston but with an outreach program here in Yucatan. An agreement was struck and their info began to flow in.

A Merry Little Christmas

In mid-July Jana and I met for a working lunch at La Villa Maria, a classy restaurant on Calle 59. Among other things, we discussed a deadline for the project. We both agreed that we wanted the book on the market for the holidays and we guessed that a mid-September date would be necessary for this to happen. Jana said she would schedule a meeting with Yucatan Today to discuss a quote for printing and a timeline. At this point we both agreed again that, if need be, we’d do a “down and dirty” first edition if that is what it would take to make deadline.

A week later we met with young Andrea, the 30 something GM and daughter of the founder of Yucatan Today, the top tourist publication of the Yucatan and the number one tourist website in all of México. Andrea, 6’ tall and stunning, of both gringo and Latin blood, and completely bi-lingual, is extraordinarily talented and with the help of her editor Juanita, a 50 year old Canadian, we were walked through the entire process and given a vision for the book, in printed form. Andrea was already somewhat familiar with the project as her American mother was a member of the group. Within a couple days they gave us an extremely competitive quote with a September 17th deadline to make the holiday market. Jana gave them the go ahead.

Now it was the book, day and night. It became all consuming in late August when Mary went home for a family fix; she’d been really missing the kids. Then I spent all my waking hours, outside of the personal training, on the book. Jana, even with her incredible social calendar, devoted herself to the project. It was an odd arrangement working with Jana in that her most productive time was from 10pm or so until maybe 4 or 5am. My day commenced at 6-7am. Consequently we almost never communicated in real time.  At this point, with Mary gone, I’d work well into the night and Jana would work through the night.  Consequently, every morning, I would wince and look through my fingers at the 10 or so emails of no holds barred critique from Jana. I actually used this to my advantage in pushing through the real estate chapter. This was one of the most important and one of the last chapters to be written. After nagging Jana about this for some time, I did a little bit of googling and wrote the first draft. It worked like a charm. Please understand that I know little about real estate in the US and nothing about it, in Mexico. Jana has been involved in several real estate transactions, here in Merida. That next morning I got a scathing critique of my first draft. After a few more volleys, we put the chapter to bed.

Sharon came back to reclaim her house at the end of August for her fall semester teaching duties. Jana, to keep my focus on the book, and maybe out of kindness, offered for our temporary residence, her other house which they had been renting as a vacation property. We moved the whole six blocks to this romantic west coast style house, complete with pool and gardens, and set up shop. When Jana upgraded her computer she generously gave Mary her old IBM laptop and I put her to work editing and proofing. buy Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

On the eve of our deadline, I got two brain dumps (one from Laurie) and a request to rewrite a chapter from Jana. She pretended as if she had never been involved with “putting it to bed”. Amidst the most profanity filled night of my life we got the thing done. Accompanied by Jana, we presented the CD to Andrea and Juanita at their Yucatan Today offices at 2:00pm September 17, 2008, right on deadline.

Merida Serendipity Continues

Rosie and Kevin Visiting Us at our Merida Flat

Rosie and Kevin Visiting Us at our Merida Flat

Welcome valued reader. By now you know that Bruce and Mary have joined an environmental group called Mérida Verde, Green Mérida. At their very first meeting Bruce finds himself, with a little help from some fine red wine, volunteering to head up a fund raising book writing project. However this is not the only thing on their agenda. Join them now in late April 2008.

We’ve been in this little flat on busy Calle 59 for a couple months now, but the bus traffic and the heat are driving us a little bonkers. Of course it is

The Incredibles psp Golden Earrings video the 2nd hottest month of the year, coming into the hottest month, where the average daytime high is 98°F. Mary mops the floor every other day and gets up grime from the diesel fumes that the incredible bus traffic on 59 puts into our flat; our bare feet are always dirty. It makes us wonder what our lungs are starting to look like. And this concrete building has really been doing a good job as a thermal mass. Thank god we’re adjusting to it a little bit. The other morning I got up, walked into the living room and thought that it had cooled down a little, that it was fairly comfortable. Our thermometer said 85. We do have an a/c unit in the bedroom and when the ceiling fan can’t keep up we turn it on for an hour or so before bedtime and that will hold it, with the fan on high, for most of the night. My budgetary awareness (cheapness) is not scoring well with Mary, lately.

So, we have made a decision to leave this place. We love the location, and our landlord Fernando. In fact Fernando is such an awesome person that he volunteered, when he learned that we would be going to MN for 2 weeks in the middle of May, to suspend our rent and he told us to just leave our things, he would look after them. But we still need to move.

And I need to get started on the book. I’ve read Jane McCarthy’s Living in San Miguel a couple times and I have started on the outline. I’m discovering that this project will not simply be a matter of lifting Jane’s book, plug and play the Mérida module and bingo, there you go, which is what Jana seems to think. It’s going to be a little more complicated than that.

We also need to get a something resembling an income stream, which means for me that I need to get some personal training clients. For Mary it is utilizing her TEFL training, teaching English.

Focusing on the housing thing today, we take a break from my writing and Mary’s continual floor mopping and walk up to the Mérida English Library. We want to check their bulletin board for possible rentals. At the door we’re greeted by Harriet, our new friend from the library social that we attended last Friday evening. We chat and tell her of our search and she says, “You know I have just the place for you and it’s pretty nice.” I respond, “Pretty nice, huh, you know we’re pretty cheap.” “How about just utilities?” she says slyly. “Really!?” we harmonize. Harriet goes on to explain that a friend of hers, a TESL teacher, has to go back to CT for the summer and is looking for house-sitters. Harriet, a woman of action, gets on the phone, calls up Sharon, and then turns the phone over to Mary. They have a friendly conversation and a meet and greet at Sharon’s casa is scheduled.

Fast-forward to June, 2008: We are living in Sharon’s large, but sparsely furnished casa one ½ block off beautiful Paseo de Montejo. I have completed the book outline and several chapter first drafts, with the help of Jana and the Mérida Verde network, and I am actively training three clients at the Pure Fitness gym. Mary has taken over Sharon’s TESL classes at CIS, and we have settled into a busy routine that seems to be working.
