The New Pier!

Bienvenido, loyal reader. Please join Bruce and Mary as they check out this much-awaited jewel of Old Town, the new pier.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe new Muelle Los Muertos, Los Muertos Pier is finally done and here is the view of this impressive work of engineering from the vantage point of our usual spot on Playa Los Muertos.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

According to our good friend Pancho, vendedor de sombrillas, umbrella salesperson, this project has been two years in the building.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd from the pier that is me yonder, in what Pancho calls ‘mi casa’.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAGoing through our photo files, this is the best pic I could find of the state of construction when we landed here last June.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis is our first visit to Los Muertos Pier, here we are at the water taxi dock. This ‘serpentine’ embedded stone effect is a theme decorating the Malecon and many sidewalks throughout the city.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThese folks are headed to Yelapa, a fishing village only accessible by boat.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe mast is the architectural centerpiece of this beautiful structure.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt takes a lot to support that sucker!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This gentleman is taking a break on the bench that rings the circular walkway. BTW: Local policia tell us that there is absolutely no food or beverage allowed on the pier… and no diving! But we have seen plenty of dock divers from our beach vantage, so that rule is getting busted regularly.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe’re exiting the pier and if we were to keep on going, climbing the stairs up and down the hill, we’d be home!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We’re old and we don’t get out much at night, but Pancho told us that we have to see Muelle Los Muertos lit up and boy, was he right.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe sophisticated lighting system seamlessly merges from color to color.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANot a bad place for an evening bite and beers.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd we’ll wrap it up with my favorite color, green.

Thanks for visiting, gentle reader. As you can see, the new pier has really lit up an already electric Old Town beach scene. Bruce and Mary are in serious danger of having too much fun here, let’s hope they survive! :) Hasta proxima Domingo!

    Hi Bruce and Mary!
The pier is beautiful (I love all the colors!), and the architecture is pretty cool. So, I’m wondering – why is the beach named Los Muertos?
    Cheers!

    Hola Cheryl,

Yes, the pier is pretty cool! We watched a lot of the building of it and felt a little sorry for some of those poor guys who were working 7 days a week, at times.

If I recall the story correctly, this area was subject to a lot piracy and often the beach was littered with bodies. It is kind of gruesome name for such a pretty beach.

Disfruta tu Domingo, mi hermana muy amable!

    Cheers!

Hola, Bruce & Mary! At Los Tules, where we’ll be staying next winter, we will have private palapas and a quiet beach. Looking at Bruce staking his claim on Playa Los Muertos, I wonder if we’ll be missing too much of the real Mexico. It’s all happening downtown! Maybe we’ll choose to hop the bus and join you there more often than not.

Hola Tom, good to hear from you!

Los Tules looks like an awfully nice place. But I must admit that we do indeed love Old Town and you’re right it’s a quick and easy bus ride to Playa Los Muertos, see ya there!

    Thanks for reading.

    Cheers!

Have been following you meandering about town and actually have been looking for you for the past week and a bit.

Every couple of months we watched the demolition of the old Pier and the work on the new. The whole process took lionger than several income tax returns. It wasn’t a 2 year process.

I like it, as opposed to a lot of my friends in town, but am squiring a couple of great friends/newbies for a week. and they loved it. Except, my mate is a construction supervisor who reckons give the wiring and the rest. . . including the lamination on the concrete. He wud not put his name on this project.

It’s Mexico and you guys never saw the old pier.

This is nicer is so many ways, but it was done on the cheap.

I have a couple of invitation to the party on monday including the main one where they say I don’t need a mask,
and one where I knock on the door and say”…..” sent me but its more important to help Mi Amigo celebrate his child bride’s 55 birthday.

PM me if you want to get together for a bebida or three.

    Or four.

    Saludos

Hahaha, Barb! Yes we thought the same thing. If I was clever enough I would have had fun with that in the caption.

    Thanks for reading.

    Cheers!!

The pier looks just beautiful, I love the colors. Ike and I have decided that we need to save a bit more before we can come and visit. So we will not e coming in March, I’m setting my sights on Dec/Jan 2014. We can help you celebrate your birthday. Mean while, I’ll keep living vicarously through setfreeinmexico! Love you guys. OX
