Bye Bye, My Friends, Goodbye!

Bienvenido, loyal reader!I guess there is no easy way to say this, but after eight and a half years and more than 400 posts, we are retiring the blog. It has always been a labor of love, not netting us a penny as the server fees have always exceeded the Ad income.  But now, at this point in our lives, I think it is fair to say that we simply no longer have the energy for it.

Friends, this blog-site will be live until the 21st of April so please feel free in surfing the site and saving any of your favorite posts. An update: Hostgator, because of the years we have been with them, has gifted us one more month of hosting, so this blog will be live until May 21st.

We, Mary and Bruce, take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and kind and generous comments over the years, all have been greatly appreciated. Cheers, Amigos!

Thanks for visiting, gentle reader, Happy Trails!

Well, damn. I will miss you and your adventures. PVR is one of my favorite places and I got to visit it every Sunday through your posts. Thank you for all that you’ve shared.

  2. Bruce - April 9, 2017

  4. Bruce - April 14, 2017

My Apologizes, Jim and Marilynn, I just saw your comment, for some reason it was in my spam file.

Enjoy the beach, but you probably won’t see us there. For reasons that are hard to explain, we’d rather go to Pitillal than the beach. Which is funny because when we first moved here, we spent every available moment on the beach.

    Cheers!

  5. Tyler - April 9, 2017

Well, you 2 have brought many a smile to my face, and I thank you for that. Maybe we will meet for a happy hour somewhere. Who knows. Maybe a bucket of beer will fly around the corner…😀😀😀
    Best of wishes,
    Tyler

  6. Bruce - April 9, 2017

    Thanks Tyler!

You know us, we never say no to beer, Cheers!

  7. Cathie - April 9, 2017

Oh I will your Sunday morning blogs!
I kept forgetting to say congratulations on your blog award – you certainly deserve it. I have never seen another blog in your style with an in depth blog post where we feel like we are right there beside you.

Wishing you and Mary many years of health and happiness and deepest thanks – Mucho gracias senor

P.S. 10 months until our move to San Miguel (almost was Merida but in the end decided on San Miguel). WOOO HOO!!
Can’t wait to join you guys in the retired gringo set of Mexico and to be “Set Free in Mexico” (BEST BLOG NAME EVER)

  8. Bruce - April 9, 2017

Muchas gracias for the congrats, Cathie!

And thanks for your kind words and well wishes to you in your upcoming retirement.

Confession: We’ve always really liked our blog name, too.

    Cheers!

  9. Alex - April 9, 2017

I totally get it. I decided from the getgo that my blog would be for me and last as long as it was fun. It’s a journal of sorts. I hope you will continue to be a follower. I always appreciate your comments. Thanks for the friendship. You actually supported our decision to make the leap. Best decision we ever made! Good luck in your future adventures. Alex & Lisa

We were mostly silent followers, except when we exchanged a couple of emails in the Merida days. But I will also miss the Sunday update habit to see how you guys were getting along. My wife and I are now retired and are trying to find a place to land this year. But I’ll raise a glass to ya’ll from time to time, no matter where we go. Cheers.

Nice to hear from you, Elaine and Peter!

  23. Rick Wright - April 9, 2017

I’m really hoping this is a belated April fools joke!

  24. Bruce - April 9, 2017

Sorry Rick, it’s the real deal.

Thanks for following the blog, Cheers!

  25. Rick - April 9, 2017

I have to believe there is some value to what you’ve done so far. Just need to figure out a way to get the ad income?

  26. Bruce - April 9, 2017

    Hola Rick,

I could never figure out a way to monetize the blog properly but then I realized that, although our followers are loyal and generous, we simply don’t have enough to break even, no matter what is done. But the main reason we are retiring it is because I’m actually kind of tired of talking about us. I am going to put my efforts into fiction for awhile and see how that goes.

Thanks for your concern and… thanks for having followed us, Cheers!

  27. Mark Darveaux - April 9, 2017

Sorry to hear that Bruce, I enjoyed hearing about your adventures. You have some writing skills.

  28. Bruce - April 9, 2017

    Thanks Mark, appreciated.

And thanks for having followed us, Cheers!

  29. Teri Walker - April 9, 2017

It has been a wonderful journey to follow and live through vicariously. I have enjoyed your sense of wit and humor as well as intellect. Thank you good friend, Cheers

  30. Bruce - April 14, 2017

My apologies, Teri, I am just seeing your comment now, for some reason it was in my spam filter.

I am glad to hear that you have enjoyed the ride and thank you for your generous words.

Thank you for having followed, Cheers!

  31. Claudia - April 9, 2017

Bruce and Mary even though I didn’t read your blog weekly it was great to see what was happening in your lives. Hope you will post once in awhile so we all know how things are going .

  32. Bruce - April 9, 2017

    Thanks, Claudia!

I’m afraid the blog will be live for only a little longer. I will try to be more active on Facebook, however.

Thanks for having followed the blog, Cheers!

  33. Sharon Mackwell - April 9, 2017

Aw, say it isn’t so!! No, really, I do understand. I will miss the lovely pictorial narratives of your mini-adventures in PV. You’re staying in Mexico, though, right?

  34. Bruce - April 9, 2017

Hahaha, Sharon, I’m afraid it is so.

Yes, we will be staying in Mx for the near future but hoping to spend more time Stateside in coming years.

  37. Sheila - April 9, 2017

Dear Bruce and Mary. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for the years and adventures you have shared with us. I will miss your Sunday installments, but totally understand not wanting to be committed to anything in your retirement. Please check in from time-to-time to let your followers know how you are doing. You have inspired me to step outside of my comfort zone and for that I am forever grateful.

  38. Bruce - April 14, 2017

I am so sorry Sheila, I am seeing your comment just now. For some reason it was in my spam filter.

Glad you hear that you have enjoyed the blog.

Thank you for having followed it, Cheers!

Thank you for your detailed and oh so informative blog, as we have learned many valuable tidbits here and there. We’ll continue to vacation in PV, and if we see you, we’ll give you a holler & see if you have time for a cerveza. I wish you and Mary well in your retirement and I hope you can get more state time with your family as you plan. Best of luck!

  41. Bruce - April 10, 2017

We appreciate your time and work on the blog. I don’t know if you can PM me or not, but let me know and I’ll be happy to give you my email address. We will be back in PV mid June.

  48. Ranee Milliman - April 9, 2017

Bruce and Mary – I feel like I just found you and that I am going to lose you too soon. 🙁 I am still glad that I did find your blog and truly enjoyed reading about your daily adventures and more. I am also glad that we did get a chance to communicate a bit and I wish you both nothing but the best. Getting settled in here is going pretty good. Still plenty of projects to keep us both busy. And second great grandchild born on New Years Day – a sweet little girl that big brother is taking full responsibility for (after he got over his initial jealousy) I hope your life in Mexico is nothing but a very long vacation. Take Care – Ranee

Thanks for having followed us, Cheers!

  52. Jeff Watson - April 10, 2017

Why don’t you transfer the blog over to a free host like WordPress or Blogger. That way 8 years of hard work won’t go down the tubes, and we’ll still get to reminisce.

  53. Bruce - April 10, 2017

That is a very good idea, Jeff. I will look into it.

And thanks for having followed us, Cheers!

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences they are such a great guide.
I stumbled on your blog when researching retiring in MX. From your beginning in Merida, then I was thrilled to see you move to PV which is our favorite pacific side destination.
Your blog has been a great resource. There are so many great posts hopefully you will be able to move it over to a free site. I wonder if there is a way to display all the posts as one long post then it could be saved or printed to a pdf.
    Take Care, Wayne And Karen

  128. Lisa Beeman - April 11, 2017

Oh, wow! I will miss you guys! I’ve read and enjoyed every word of your journey. When I first started following, my husband and I were just starting to talk about retiring (a little early) in Mexico, and you really helped us visualize a lot of the specifics (and joys and challenges) involved. We’re now fully committed, if a few years away still (but down from 10 to 5!) I’m sorry to see that I will no longer be able to read of it, but I know your excellent journey will continue. Buen viaje!

  129. Bruce - April 12, 2017

Thanks, Lisa, for your kind words and years of support. And it’s nice to hear that we have helped in some small way your vision of retirement down here.

Good luck in that venture, Cheers!

  130. Gail Beyrle - April 12, 2017

  134. Pat Monegan - April 12, 2017

Hi Bruce and Mary. The blog has been great but I can see how it would become a chore. I can find your facebook page and you have my email so let’s keep in touch. IF everyone travelled the way you do, the ugly american would be a thing of the past,

  135. Bruce - April 12, 2017

Hola Pat, good to hear from you!

Hahaha, wouldn’t that be great if there were no more ugly Americans?!

Thanks for your support all these years and we will stay in touch, Cheers!

  136. Joanne - April 12, 2017

Well, there is nothing to be done but to hop a plane to PV. If we can’t see you online, we’ll just have to come to you instead.

  137. Bruce - April 13, 2017

Come and see if the Pacific is as blue as it is in your dreams, dear friend.

  138. Tonia Kimsey - April 13, 2017

My Dear Bruce and Mary, Loved your Blog and it was a wonderful way for us to keep in touch over these years. It was great, I always knew where you were and what you were doing.
Wishing you both all the very best and as well as to your beautiful family.
    With love, Tonia

  139. Bruce - April 13, 2017

So nice to hear from you, Tonia!

We’re very happy to have had your support these last eight years.

  141. Bruce - April 13, 2017

Glad you enjoyed the blog, Tim.

Thanks for the well wishes and thanks for supporting us all these years, Cheers!

  142. Cat - April 13, 2017

Hi Mary & Bruce! Maybe you should just keep this “chat” going. 😉

Seriously though, have you figured out a way to leave the blog, but make it inactive? When I first discovered your blog 4 or so years ago, I went back and read the entire blog from the very beginning and would do it again if it doesn’t disappear.

  143. Bruce - April 13, 2017

    Hola Cat,

I’m afraid the only way I can leave it up is to continue paying the monthly server fees.

I’ve looked into migrating to free hosts but I am afraid I don’t have the computer skills to do so.

We are certainly open to ideas but at this time I see no way to keep it available, without paying to do so.

    Thanks for your thoughts, Cheers!

  144. Dede - April 13, 2017

Thank you for the weeks … months … YEARS of vicarious fun, helpful info and especially deliciousness. Even more thanks for making my trips to PV better because of the great intel you have shared.

Sundays won’t be the same without you!

  145. Bruce - April 13, 2017

Thanks so much for your kind words, Dede.

It has been a pleasure serving you and our other followers, Cheers!

  146. rich olavsen - April 13, 2017

I will miss you guys, but when I am at Fidencios I will have one for you.
    Salud,Rich

  147. Bruce - April 14, 2017

    Hola Rich,

Glad to have had your support over the years.

Say Hola from us to Sergio.

    Cheers!

  148. ViajeroPerdido - April 14, 2017

Oh, I really hope the archives aren’t lost to the world forever. If you guys, or someone, anyone, can keep a copy available somewhere, it would continue to be such a great resource for anybody thinking of moving to Mexico.

Not to mention, very much a fun read too.

Enjoy your retirement, and thanks for sharing so much over the years!

  149. Bruce - April 14, 2017

    Hola ViaheroPerdido,

It is amazingly difficult to save the blog to my computer, in any legible form. The back-up files are computer code. I have tried to download software to read them but it has proved beyond my skills. I have contacted a local webmaster who thinks he can help. I should hear from him soon.

But you are correct, when the blog goes down, April 21st, the info will be lost.

Thanks for your concern and support, Cheers!

  150. Teresa - April 14, 2017

Thank you Bruce & Mary for sharing your lives with us! I will sorely miss reading about your adventures and looking at all those pics! I always looked forward to Sundays to see where you went and see what you ate, LOL….
We are coming down to PV on April 22 and I have always said that we wanted to buy you both a beer (or two, or three). We are staying in Nuevo this time and would love to make this happen!
Contact us by our email if you are around. Cheers to you and Mary!
    Wishing you all the best!

  151. Bruce - April 14, 2017

Thanks so much for your kind words, Teresa!

We really love feedback like yours.

As you know, we never say no to beers, I will email you.

    Cheers!

  152. erin - April 14, 2017

Will so miss your posts. Was always fun to see you somewhere we had been. Couldn’t make it this year,so was reading and re-reading your comments. As a NOB reader, was fun to see you come home for holidays and occassions. I’m in Winnipeg,so consider you ‘Close’ lol. You can bet I will save some of your blogs. Thanks for your kind words and support, much appreciated.

    Cheers!

  154. Constance - April 14, 2017

I just have been introduced to your blog via the PV TA forum. I am going to try to read your Merida & PV blog before it is taken down. I am sad that I had not known about it sooner. I traveled the Yucatan including Merida by bus a couple of times. I went to PV for a month this Jan/Feb. I am hooked. I am booked for another month for the holiday season 2017/18 with an open-ended flight ticket.:) Best of luck to you both. Thank you for all the dreams that you have inspired.

  155. Bruce - April 15, 2017

Thanks so much for your kind words, Constance, it is very gratifying to hear that you have enjoyed the blog.

And thank you for the well wishes, Cheers!

Glad you have enjoyed the blog and thanks for your well wishes, Cheers!

  158. Nancy Gayron - April 15, 2017

    Thanks a lot, Nancy!

And thank you for having followed us, Cheers!

  160. Ed - April 16, 2017

Hi Guys, first off, I want to thank you for the years of enjoyment I have received from reading your blogs. My wife and I are same age as you and we love Vallarta as much as you do. Janet and I have been to PV 31 times so far and now that we are retired, we spend our entire winters down there. It is a magical city filled with so much to do and so many new experiences to enjoy. We wish you the best in your retirement and hope we run into you as we explore the streets of our beloved town Puerto Vallarta.

  161. Bruce - April 16, 2017

You are very welcome, Ed. And we’d like to thank you for your years of support.

If you see us on the street be sure to hail us.

And thanks for the well wishes, much appreciated. Cheers!

  162. Elizabeth Brown - April 16, 2017

    Dear gentle Bruce and Mary:

I discovered your blog by accident when searching for a recipe for a caparinha. We went there and found it to be as delightful as you described!

Your joyous approach to life, your embracing of simplicity and your tone of gentleness has inspired me to reject some of the rat-race mentality we have unwittingly imported to Mexico–and, also, to give up the coloring of my hair. If I can look half as beautiful as Mary with natural hair, I won’t miss my slavish colouring.

All the best to both of you in your future, wherever it leads.

  163. Bruce - April 17, 2017

Thanks so much for your generous and kind comment, Elizabeth. Mary is still glowing!

Thanks to you for having followed us, it has been very much appreciated, Cheers!

  164. Kathy R - April 16, 2017

I am so sad to read that you are closing down your blog!! I have been quite a silent follower, but have read every single entry since the beginning, having been alerted to the blog through the Echo Press as a fellow Alexandrian, and knew Mary and Izzy through the insurance industry. It has been a pleasure to have been allowed into your lives so I could live vicariously through your adventures. You have been my company every Sunday evening over a big bowl of popcorn and a beer!! I will miss you both very much and hoping I am successful in connecting with your on FB. Stay well and wishing you continued adventures!!

  165. Bruce - April 17, 2017

    Good afternoon Kathy and Alexandria!

Thank you so much for your kind and generous words and for letting us know the pleasure you have derived from our reports.

And thanks for having followed us all these years, Cheers!

  166. Jennifer Burton - April 19, 2017

    Hi Bruce and Mary,

I have been a silent Canadian follower of you since your Merida days. I have enjoyed your posts and although my retirement is still 5-6 years away, I’ve lived it vicariously through you. All the best to you in your future adventures!

  167. Bruce - April 19, 2017

    Hola Jennifer,

Glad to hear you have enjoyed the blog and have followed all these years.

And thanks for the well wishes, much appreciated, Cheers!

  168. Constance - April 20, 2017

    Hola Mary & Bruce,

I have finished my marathon reading of your blog, one day before it disappears! I am thankful for the person on the PV TA forum that mentioned your blog & that it would disappear in a few days. Otherwise, I would not have known it existed!

Thank you for sharing your “adventures in paradise.”

The very best to you both.

    Constance

  169. Bruce - April 20, 2017

    Hola Constance!

Sorry to have put your through that! I have been remiss in not sharing that just a couple days ago Hostgator, because we have been with them so long, told me that they would gift one more month of hosting. I will update our last post to reflect that.

Glad you enjoyed our blog, sorry you had to marathon it.

    Cheers!

  170. Tom - April 21, 2017

Hi Bruce and Mary. I think I’ve covered all your postings after finding your site a couple months ago. I’m pretty sure I met you, Bruce, quite a few years ago when we were staying at the Lily. You came up for a look at our corner room and were impressed with the view, That was back before all the new condos on the southside (crazy how all that is changing now, eh?) Your riverwalk post got us there this last trip..nice. That was the last of our lookout walks of the trip, the first being the one overlooking the bay that starts by the Panorama rest/hotel, then the one looking down on the little town of Talpa, up in the mountains. We are approaching retirement age, so somewhat of an accomplishment.

Thanks for all the effort you put into documenting the fun you’ve had, save it all if you can, there may be a free host to put it on somewhere, even if you don’t update any more.

    Saludos,
    Tom

  171. Bruce - April 21, 2017

Thanks Tom for taking the time to do all that reading.

Yes, Old Town is changing right before our eyes.

I’ve looked into migrating the blog to a free host like Google’s blogger but I’m afraid it is quite complicated, I don’t have the skills for it.

    Cheers!

  172. Tom - April 22, 2017

Hi again, no need to thank me for someything I enjoyed doing.. Anyway, here’s a link to making a backup for Hostgator, maybe it will make it easy for you.
    https://legacy-help.pro.photo/bludomain-backup/

And this looks like another way:
    http://www.httrack.com/

I would pursue it if I were you, if nothing else but to give to the grandkids on a DVD or flash drive

  173. Bruce - April 22, 2017

Thanks so much for the links, Tom, I will definitely check them out.

And thanks for having followed us all these years, much appreciated!

    Cheers!

  174. Tay - May 4, 2017

    Hola Bruce y Mary,

May I join everyone else in thanking you for all your sharing and in wishing you all happiness!

Also wish you all success with any off-blog writing you do. I imagine I’m not alone in saying I’d enjoy being able to read whatever you might write in the fictional vein. If there’s anyway you could keep us informed, that would be great!

    Best, Tay

  175. Mike - May 6, 2017

    Bruce and Mary,

Thank you for letting us share your adventures. I am going to miss reading the blog. I hope to start my own Mexico adventure someday and follow in your footsteps.

Best wishes to the both of you,

    Mike
