I live just a few blocks from El Lucero del Alba and have never been in there! I need to venture out more often. Thanks for the story and introduction to the staff 🙂

My pleasure, Kevin! When you visit, tell them that Bruce and Mary brought you in. Oh, BTW, Enrique is trying to learn English, so try a few basic phrases with him, and he’ll be happy to help you with Spanish,it’s fun doing lessons in a bar.

    Cheers!

    Hi
I enjoyed a number of your postings very much. I am coming to Progreso for three months in the new year where I have rented a small apt. I have been in Merida before and loved it, and in fact, occasionally find myself thinking of relocating to the Yucatan. I would very much like to rent an apt in Merida later on next year, with a wonderful landlord like Fernando, and try life in Merida for several months. Would it be possible to give me contact info for Fernando either by return email or when I get down there when I could contact you by email or phone.
    Thanks a lot
    Phyllis

Just heard of your blogsite from Yucatan Living.. I will be moving to Progreso in a few weeks. I will keep you listed as valuable information – as I learn how / when /where etc… We too are going to be “working” alternatively.. as our friends do – I think you may know Chuck – I have had the opportunity to meet Jaromey too.. She’s a hoot.

See you around – until then.. keep writing.. i’m learning

  5. Bruce - November 3, 2011

    Hola Amy and Richard!

Yes, we’ve been friends with Chuck and Joanne for nearly three years now and Jaromey, who originally lined up our condo on the beach, our first home here, is one of our closest friends.

    Thanks for reading!

    Cheers!!

    Hola Bruce and Mary,
I will be staying at Casa Chalia for a few days in January. I have not decided on a beach hotel. Can you offer any suggestions for small/inexpensive/decent hotels in Progreso,Telchac or any of the beach areas? Probably for a 4 night stay.
I work every Sunday and always look forward to your post into my email.Thank you for all the pictures and sharing “everyday” stuff!

  11. Bruce - December 18, 2011

    Hola Linda,

  12. Ron Markle - January 23, 2012

    Hi again Bruce y Mary,
Not a throw away to me. A sign and faces to to find cigars
A little more local knowledge if you are able. My wife had a bad fall with a concussion and whiplash and is currently seeing a physiotherapist and registered massage therapist for cranial sacral massage. We’ll have to cancel our stay in Merida unless I can line up this treatment.
Can’t seem to locate a registered massage therapist for cranial sacral treatment in Merida.
Do you know of any or were I might inquire?
    Thanks

  13. Bruce - January 23, 2012

    Hola Ron,

This, from my good friend Reg:

Have you thought of Alerfin just three blocks east of Walmart. Danny is an American who is a registered therapist…they are in the phone book……Larry uses their services…

I hope this helps (thanks Reg!)

    Cheers!

  14. Kevin Dyer - February 12, 2012

We have had the pleasure of visiting many of Bruce’s “blog spots” with Mary and him on our visits to Merida. It is always a blast to spend time with old friends and experience new and unique places, food and people. Especially when Mary is the ultimate guide and interpreter, making access to the culture so much more enjoyable and easier. Keep blogging on Bruce and remember to always listen to Mary!

  15. Bruce - February 12, 2012

Igualmente, Kevin and Rosie, mis amigos. The highlights of our winters are your visits!

    Cheers!

  16. Benny and Cathy - February 13, 2012

    Hi guys…..

We’re back in Playa del Carmen and had to check out your blog – very cool! Going to get settled back in here (tons of laundry needs doing asap) then spend some time checking your older blogs.

We 6 canucks had a fabulous time on our road trip and a few of us will be back in Merida before heading north in April. We’ll be in touch and hope we can meet for a cervesa or two.

    BC from BC

  17. Bruce - February 13, 2012

    Hola Benny and Cathy,

    Good to hear from you!

Cervezas always sound good, give us a holler when you’re in town.

    Cheers!

  18. Jaromey Menshal - March 6, 2012

    Hola Bruce and Mary,
Great seeing you on the weekend ! As far as I know, Bodega in Progreso still has sardinas en chipotle… I’ll check it out for you next time I’m there and I’ll let you know. Some things are just better in Progreso ! 🙂

  19. Bruce - March 6, 2012

    Hola Jaromey,

Good to see you in my digital world. That is good news about the sardinas in Chipotle. Next time you’re there if you would be so kind as to pick me up a couple of tins, I would forever be in your debt!

See you soon, we love our beach rendezvous with you!

    Cheers!!

  20. Murray - February 17, 2013

Bruce and Mary. What a wonderful blog on a place that Rose and I love. Keep up the great tours and remember that being “El Cheapo” is not all bad as it usually finds you some very interesting places which you have proven. Rose and I will be down in May and will make a definate attempt to meet you two. I will buy the first beer 🙂

  21. Bruce - February 17, 2013

    Hola Murray,

Hahaha, thanks for a great rationale for my cheapskate-ism!

Happy to have a beer with you when you hit town.

    Thanks for reading.

    Cheers!

  22. Sue Elliott Smith - September 2, 2013

Bruce and Mary: I just found your blog today from a post on Trip Advisor and I could spend hours here! My husband had a stroke a little over a year ago at age 56 so we can relate a bit to your past health issues. We will spend 6 weeks in PV this year at the El Dorado. Already spent 2 of the weeks back in April but will return October 19 for 4 more weeks however we yearn for your lifestyle someday! We are going to try some of the places you talk about in your blog when we are there this time. Thanks for all of the interesting information and great stories. Maybe we’ll run into you in October.

    Sue

  23. Bruce - September 2, 2013

    Hola Sue,

Thank you so much for your kind words.

I have great sympathy for you and your husband. I had a MCI and I’ll take that any day over a stroke which took my dad and grand-dad.

Yes, please introduce yourselves if you see us on the street.

    Thanks for reading.

    Cheers!

  24. Sue Elliott Smith - September 7, 2013

Yes Bruce, those strokes can be rough! Glad you are recovered from you MCI. Luckily with the exception of some short term memory issues David has fully recovered. He still has the brain stem aneurism that caused the stroke so that’s why he retired in December and since I work from home we can travel some. We are so looking forward to getting there and for 4 weeks this time! 🙂 We are going to go to some Meet & Greets this time to hopefully meet some new people to prepare for long term stay in PV some day soon.

We’ll introduce ourselves if we see you for sure!

    Sue

  25. Bruce - September 7, 2013

    Hola Sue,

Glad to hear that David’s outcome was much better than most.

    Safe travels and enjoy!

    Cheers!!

  26. Linda & Bill Case - February 6, 2014

Just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate your blog. We are in PV every year in February. In fact, we will be there in just a few days. We can hardly wait! We are staying at Villa Premiere with some other friends we have met while in PV. We plan on visiting your sandal shop & also will be going to the Rat Pack show. Maybe we will see you! Keep up the good work!!!!!

  27. Bruce - February 6, 2014

    Hola Linda and Bill,

Thanks for your kind words! We know the Villa Premiere, you will be vacationing in style. Glad we gave you some tips to check out. Be sure to introduce yourselves if you see us on the street.

    Cheers!

  28. Craig Welch - February 23, 2014

Bruce, where do you get all of your sleeveless t shirts, Mexico or the states?

  29. Bruce - February 23, 2014

    Hola Craig,

It is really difficult for us to find cheap tank tops cut the way I like them, down here, so I must come clean. On our semiannual trips back to the States I buy a bunch at Walmart, usually for about $5 each. So that is my dirty secret. 🙂

    Thanks for reading.

    Cheers!

  30. Emily - April 9, 2014

Hello Bruce & Mary! Just discovered your great website as we are hoping to spend next winter in Mexico, quite possibly Merida. Looks like you have plenty of valuable information here that I’m looking forward to reading in greater depth. I’m also curious about why you decided to leave Merida for Puerto Vallarta and how you would compare the two cities. Do you have any posts that address this that you could direct me to?

    Thanks so much!
    Emily

  31. Bruce - April 9, 2014

    Hola Emily,

Thank you for your kind words. And yes we do have a post that addresses why we left Merida for Puerto Vallarta, you can find it here: https://setfreeinmexico.com/?p=3947

    Cheers!

  32. Emily - April 9, 2014

Thank you so much, Bruce. How interesting — on our one trip to Merida, in December 2012, we stayed at Larry’s B&B. Small world indeed. We are also looking at PV as we love beaches and mountains as well. Appreciate your quick reply!

  33. Bruce - April 9, 2014

    Happy to help, Emily.

    Cheers!

Stay safe in the upcoming days. Hope you are way above sea level.

  47. Bruce - October 23, 2015

    Hola Betty,

We are close to the beach but about 80′ above sea level and tucked behind a ridge. We feel pretty safe.

    Thanks for your concern, Cheers!

  48. Joanne Stelzner - October 23, 2015

Bruce and Mary! Stay safe this weekend! Thinking of you. Ran into you in April at Los Muertos Brewery and forgot to buy you a beer! Ralph and Joanne

Hahaha, yes we remember you, Joanne and Ralph! Well, there’s always next time. 🙂

And thanks for your concern, Cheers!

  50. amy budd - October 23, 2015

stay well.. sea level is one thing.. they are saying the winds are so strong most buildings will not survive.. – electricity will more than likely not be present for a few days if not weeks. Stay safe.

  51. Bruce - October 23, 2015

    Hola Amy,

Good point. There is a high rise condo going up only a couple blocks away. We hope the wind does not come from that direction, that is for sure.

    Thanks for your concern, Cheers!

  52. Rich - October 23, 2015

Take in the bird feeder and break out the vodka.
    Stay safe,
    Rich

  53. Bruce - October 23, 2015

Hahaha, will do, Rich, and in that order, Cheers!

  54. Joe - April 20, 2016

    Hola Bruce & Mary,
Similar to what others have posted I was searching the net for gym’s in PV and loved reading your post about Power Fitness. We will be there starting May 5th for 2 weeks and want a place that we can do a simple workout other than walking to maintain continue our weight loss. We don’t need anything fancy.
Is the gym still open? Do they have low season hours? We are staying at Molino De Agua so this is just up the street.
Maybe we can meet up for a cervesa or three while we are there.

    Obrigado,
    Joe

  55. Bruce - April 20, 2016

    Hola Joe,

    Glad you enjoyed the post.

Yes, the gym is still open and actually quite busy. They run the same hours all year long, open every day except Sunday.

We never say no to cervezas. 🙂

    Thanks for reading, Cheers!

  56. Kevin - February 13, 2017

    Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your blog, really helpful! I’m planning a trip to PV during Easter this and your blog has been really interesting.

Do you have any suggestions for Easter this year? Both activities and beaches (preferably some less crowded than the main one by the Malecon.

    Thanks
    Kevin

  57. Bruce - February 14, 2017

    Hola Kevin,

Glad you enjoy the blog, thanks.

Yes, the beaches will be packed. You might try Playa Camarones, 5th de Deciembre’s main beach. It’s nice and probably not quite so crowded.

For activities you could check out this: http://vallartainfo.com/

    Thanks for reading, Cheers!
